About Purpool
Purpool is about finding ways to enable (and make fun!) workplace-based ride-sharing. By making this site workplace-specific, we are building off already existing trust networks made up of people who share similar commuting patterns.
The site includes a map interface that allows you to quickly find co-workers who live near to you, features that make it easier to create and organize carpools, and visualizations that allow you to see your savings. Take the tour to get a better look at Purpool features and check out our frequently asked questions to quickly get anwsers to a range of Purpool related questions.
Purpool was first conceived By Peter Ohring and Brooke Singer, faculty members in the New Media program at Purchase College, SUNY, in Purchase, NY as a way of addressing the very serious problems caused by may cars commuting long distances. These problems include air pollution, high cost of gas, road congestion and social disengagement. With support from an award from New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) we are taking Purpool off-campus and piloting our approach to ride-sharing at PepsiCo World Headquarters in Purchase, NY and at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, ME.
